Below are scenes of the Pan- Borneo Highway. These are typical of the only highway from Kuching to Bintulu. This highway has served Sarawak over the last 20 years with major repairs and reconstruction done within the same time. Most of the stretches are lonely with very little 'commercial agriculture' being done to the lands on both sides of the Highway except for stretches of Oil Palm holdings or estates. For a quarter of the journey the weather was fine. However for about three quarters of the journey the skies were cloudy and there were many isolated rains we encountered throughout the journey from Sibu to Kuching.

Selangau is a growing small town mainly due to the fact that it is the gateway to Mukah town from the Pan Borneo Highway. The Selangau - Mukah road is now under reconstruction.

Selangau is a convenient stopover after travelling about an hour and a half from Bintulu, mainly to cool off the tyres and engine.

At At the Selangay rest area while fospa & fosma had their cup of tea and coffee break. I too had a good look of the place and enjoyed our snack of barbecued tuna done yesterday at Bintulu.

For most of the journey I didn't sleep. However at times I took to the arms of fosma for comfort.

Back to Kuching - 15th Trip ( Part 1 )

On Monday, our car got ready to leave the farm. With everything properly packed and secured to last a 10 hours journey to Kuching. This is our 15 th trip back Kuching after about a month stay in Bintulu. Fospa was adamant, " Inul, we need to be in Kuching by the 1st of July. You see I need to pay my fees for the second semester, get my textbook early and do reading quickly to pass up the assignment by 6th July. OK! Hope in! Here we go!"

There was a heavy rain at our home last night and the climb out of the farm may prove tricky as the slopes are slippery. Wells's that fospa's job to negotiate. I would as normal scream the loudest when the journey gets rough and bumpy up the slope :00))

Bintulu- Here we come!

On the 7th of Jun, we made our 15th trip to Bintulu. With this trip we touched the 17,400 km mark. On board our car was another passenger who is my fosma's sister. She was in Kuching for the Hari Gawai Dayak holiday. As usual our trip took about 10 hours. We left Kuching around 10.oo am and arrived Bintulu around 8.oo pm. The whole journey was fine and and we did not encounter any rain. This dryness could be due to the fact that the month of June is always one of the hottest months in Sarawak.

Don't know the name of this tiny bird yet. I caught it today. Brought it inside the house to show Fospa. Fospa said " Inul it's still a kid. A very young kid. Theerefooree.....we just have to let it free". However before Fospa let it flew away he took this picture for posterity. (Hah..humans!)

14th Trip Back Kuching

Today I'm a bit playful (see inset). While playing around at the front door grille I almost fell down. I guess falling down is nothing for us cats. Hmmmm
So we are back in Kuching again. Fospa has been very very busy recently and thus couldn't take a break to blog about our 14 trip back Kuching. Well today is Sunday and fospa promised to do just that...have our story posted again. Below are pictures taken during the journey to Kuching. We left Bintulu around 8.45am and arrived Kuching by 7.00 pm. The whole journey was fine and the car's air-conditioning tip top.
TRIP BACK TO KUCHING - 6 MAY 2009

It's routine now. Fospa took time to come close to the Cassia Javanica blooms at the roadside near Roban. He was so pleased because at last he managed to take a good cu shot of the blooms.

Mama Daisy sensing that Kuching is just another 30 minutes away decided to have a better view of the town of Serian. Here we've just passed the town of Serian . See the Durian Fruit Icon just slightly above Mama's head? Serian is the only town in Sarawak that has the Durian Fruit as the town's Icon.

To Bintulu on 14th trip

On the 27th of April, we took to the road again to Bintulu making it our 14th trip there. The whole journey was fine and the weather throughout was cloudy. We left Kuching at 9.00 am and arrived at our farm in a bit of darkness around 7.30 pm.
This time around we broke the journey midway at the town of Sarikei. Fospa took the opportunity to take pictures of the Sarikei express boat terminal. We skipped the town of Sibu but had a good rest at Selangau, a small town between Sibu and Tatau. Selangau would be our last leg in this 10 hours long journey. The picture (inset) shows me and mama having a rest at the car park in Selangau which is near to a river. The picture of the river is shown below, too.

That's me when I was barely 2 days old ( see picture inset) . Today I'm 1 year 3 months old. So fospa gave me a special treat of TUNA MAYONNAISE.. for lunch. I had to share it with Mama Daisy too.

Now I heard fospa whispering to Mama " Get ready soon to go back to Bintulu. Hopefully if everything's OK looks like we're gonna hit the road on Monday.".

Fospa brought me outside on the porch to do a bit of modelling. OK,OK.. I know he's so keen to put me on the Internet. So guys just click the video below and comment whatever on my modelling.

13th Trip Back Kuching

On the 6th of April, around 9.00 am we took to the road again to Kuching. This will be our 13th trip back Kuching and upon arrival the record shall stands at 15,600 km. Today as we left the farm, the weather was cool and a light shower accompanied us on the way out to the highway.

An election banner hoisted in the middle of the river? Strange but true.

At around 4.30 pm we detoured to a rural town called Lubok Antu. Fospa wanted to see the by-election festivities there. We got to see some interesting things from our car window. ( See the pictures above and below)

The road to town was decorated with flags, banners and buntings. We saw policemen busy carrying their duties. Their presence put people at ease. " Hi. we're cats. We dont't have to put on safety belts, do we?"

The big billboard shows how it is to be done. Fospa explains: If you like a candidate, cross against his party symbol. Make sure your cross is clearly and neatly done and draw within the box, or else your ballot paper is considered SPOILT ! "Well, I guess I need to do lots of practise with my paws to draw a perfect cross. Try me next time around."

Throughout the journey Mama Daisy was very cool. We didn't quarrel much. Thanks to fosma, we had soft cushion for our comfort.

We arrived Kuching around 8.30 pm.

Our fospa heard the evening news on TV. We heard him say: The party that placed the banner in the river lost.
What's that? That banner belongs to the opposition party.

Ok, Ok, enough of politics for now.

15,000 km and Going!

Mama Daisy takes long naps now. Her favourite place seems to be at the top of the filing cabinet.
I guess Mama must have very stressed from the last journey. I think I could be one of the reasons because at every start of the journey I would scream and move about in the car. But during the last trip I have improved on that behaviour. In less than 30 minutes I'm settled to my seat. Sorry Mum you may have a frightened kid, but I love you. On this 13 th trip to Bintulu our running record now stands at 15,000 km. Wah, Wah, ..Paws Up to Mama Daisy.

Back to Bintulu

On 24 March'09, we were back on the road again. This is our 13th trip to Bintulu.

Weather wise, fine and cloudy for most of the journey. Above pix shows the entrance to Sri Aman town where we dropped by for lunch break. The harvesting time was almost done as we drove on this journey through the whole length of Sarawak countryside from Kuching to Bintulu. The padi fields looked brown and abandoned after the harvesting period.

We parked our car at the town's green space where hawkers were seen displaying their jungle produces under the shade of large angsana trees.

Sibu town and its attractions

We stopped for lunch at Sibu town, after a three hours journey from Bintulu. Our favourite rest area is the Sibu Multi-Storey Car Park area. It is a big complex that includes the Sibu Central Market.

Sibu Central Market

At the Sibu Central Market, live poultry are wrapped in newspapers for easy weighing and carrying home if you decide to buy one just in case.

On this trip, the Sarawak rural landscape was washed with golden yellow and ochre because it's harvesting time. All along the highway to Kuching the Ibans are the main cultivators of paddy, be it the hill padi or the wet padi. In the distant as can be seen in the picture above are Iban longhouses.

I saw this one morning. It is really a wonderful camouflage. The toad seemed part of the ground. And what frightening eyes??!! But they are at the back!!

So this black cat came to visit us one day. It's a tomcat. But I was scared stiff to play with him.

However, fospa was generous and gave him a heavy lunch, which made him sleep very soundly later. Must have been very hungry before he popped at the back door!!!

Caught a pipit. Brought it into the house. However while indoors, it left the clutch of my paws and tried to fly away. On seeing it my fospa brought it outside and let it free....there goes my baby :(

Playful cats in bronze

This is a picture taken yesterday by my fospa at the Kuching waterfront area. He told me that one day he'll bring me to the place to have my picture taken next to them. I don't know whether I like to coz the cats there look so much bigger than me. Anyway he told me that this city got its name from ..Cats! No joke, 'Kuching' is the Malay word for cat. So, here at the waterfront they have displayed this group of playful cats in bronze sculpture. Just wonder, How will I be remembered?

Scenes Along the Way

Or what happens when nature does that extra work.

A large piece of road had slipped away and a diversion done to help traffic pass by. We saw this at a location somewhere between Bintulu to Tatau, roughly 20 minutes from the start of our journey. " Look behind me at the top left hand corner. WYSIWYS. What You See Is What You See. A yellow bulk cement truck had slipped into the ravine!

A cat's view taken from the Tatau bridge, 40 minutes drive from Bintulu. The waters from the Tatau river has overflowed and the nearby kampung got too much water in return. Poor kampung folks need to use a boat to work for a change.

11th Trip Back Kuching

Today ( 2 Feb) we are on the road again. This is our 11th trip back Kuching for Mama Daisy at least. She's the one who started this epic journey. We left Bintulu at 10 am. On the first 30 minutes leg of the journey I was nervous and panicky because to enter the main highway we had to pass through our damaged farm road and tricky hill slopes that have been badly damaged by the heavy rains of late. Nevertheless Mama was there to comfort me as always, licking my neck.

At Betong Rest Area our fospa and fosma had tea and coffee respectively at the canteen there.

Mama soon to enjoy her packet of tuna. "Not to forget me,please".

Sleeping Time

Our team arrived Kuching at 8.30 pm in slight rain thus making a total of ten and half hours journey.
On this trip we gained another 600 km. Our cumulative record now stands at 13,200 km.

Stray cats

This morning my fospa went to town to send the car for servicing. The reason being, tomorrow we'll be on our way to Kuching city. Fospa told me," You know, Inul I saw two stray cats that came by my table while I was having lunch in town. They looked cute but hungry." Lucky enough my fospa handed over some fish heads to them. Then away they went.

I am a Year Old today

Today I am a year old. My fospa brought me out early to take a good photograph of me by the blue water tank. Here's me posing as a potential model. On my first birthday, my fospa remarked that I am looking chubby, much more fleshy in all the correct parts ( what they mean by that I wonder?).

Mama Daisy was feeling very thirsty. Must have been. She sipped directly from a pail of rain water which created ripples. At the farm this last two weeks rain kept pouring days and nights non stop. They call it in Sarawak as the 'landas' season when the north easterly winds from the South China Sea hit at the coastal areas of Sarawak and therefore Bintulu is not sparred. The rainy season is better known outside Sarawak as the monsoon season. Well, drink as much as you want Mama.

What a load of reading

January has been a wet month, the last two weeks at least. My fospa ( =foster parent ..a new cat terminology! ) discouraged me to play outside. He gave me lots of assignment at home . But this I can't bear...Oh, what a load of reading!!

Mama Daisy slept I think 90% of the journey. She's so used to travelling long distances now that she takes the long journey to hibernate!

We left Kuching around 8.30 am on the 12th of December for our 11th trip to Bintulu. This trip will add another 600 km to our record. Throughout this trip the weather was a bit cloudy and we encountered no rains. This time we dropped by at Engkilili for lunch.

Visit to Cat Museum

While in Kuching recently, my foster parents visited the Cat Museum.

Looking very much like Einstein, but NO.

They said there was a picture of a cat looking very much like Einstein dispalyed at the museum. But we thought Einstein had a full moustache whereas the one in the picture a half- moustache. Too bad when we came back to Kuching after the 10th trip to Bintulu, Einstein and Macy Grey did not appear at all . Chances are we are losing both of them now.

Having recovered from the long trip from Bintulu to Kuching, Mama Daisy takes time to stroll around the garden early this morning. The lovely orange ixoras were her favourite and since their flowers were low she could easily smell them .

10 th trip Back Kuching

Today (1/12) at 9.00 am we left Bintulu for the road again. On this 10th trip back Kuching, Mama remained very cool. She was a bit grumpy at first especially when we had to climb the bumpy farm road before we could hit the smooth highway. I was in tears. I loved Bintulu for its jungle and freedom to wander about the bushes, chasing after birds, butterflies, grasshoppers, lizards and giant millipede. But Mama was kind and loving today. She comforted me and tried her best to cool my nerves. Finally after about half an hour through the journey I settled down after sensing that all the rest of the company were telling me not to fear or cry too long. Everything's OK. Thanks to Mama for all her moral support.

Mama slept through most of the time, I think eight out of the ten hours journey. Her favourite 'pillow' is this notebook bag.

We dropped by at Sarikei for lunch. At a roadside stall there our foster parents bought a grilled chicken which we got to share.

Towards the last quarter of the journey i.e after Sri Aman town, we encountered lots of heavy rain .

We arrived Kuching around 7.00 pm .

So, I rolled happily over the floor, pretending to catch it , then pushed it. But not to eat it. It was just FUN.

It's customary for us at the Laman kambatik Eco-farm to do our early morning run. Well this morning around 6.30 am we followed our foster parent taking the first morning breeze and the sniffing the early morning plumeria blooms. Half-way Mama decided to show off her catwalk, instead of running. ( Cats too are temperamental and proud and don't care a cent about the world)

To catch a bee

This morning a bee entered our house.

How do I catch it? Here my jungle training and instincts come in handy. First have a proper stance. Put you left paw for support. Then lean forward a bit while holding your balance. Your eyes on the target.

On the count of three, pull out your right paw with the swiftness of an arrow and the clench of an eagle.... oops gotchu!

Inul is nine months old

It's me to narrate the story now. This is my pix taken yesterday (25 oct) being 9 months old. I was born here in Bintulu on 25 th January'08.

Wonder why I am near the water tank?

Well, it's quite a height and safer here. Am looking towards the jungle to see the water ravaging through the bushes and overflowering the tiny stream. You see, the monsoon months have arrived . It's been raining for the last few days. Am happy to note that the water tank is full.

10 th trip to Bintulu.

We had a pit stop at Sibu town's central market on this 10th trip to Bintulu (19th October).

But my foster parents kept quiet for almost the whole 9 hours drive from Kuching to Bintulu.

It's sad that during this Hari Raya trip, Einstein didn't return home . We missed him very much. Then Macy Grey escaped out from the car as we were about to leave the house gate without our knowledge. By the time we entered the main traffic lights junction to the Kuching-Bintulu highway ( about five minutes drive from the house) we discovered Macy Grey was not in the car. We rushed back to the house to look for her. But to no avail.

We miss them both. We hope and pray that by the next time we're back in Kuching somehow they will be back with us. We pray for their safety and return.

Longing for Einstein

Brother Einstein is not back home yet. It has been 11 days since we last played with him. News is circulating in the house that we gonna be going back to Bintulu very soon. Probably end of this week. Therefore I am hoping that he will show up soon and join us on our 10 th trip to Bintulu.

Hari Raya in Kuching

On this trip to Kuching we were joined by our foster parents' grandaughter, INA ,to spend the Hari Raya holidays in Kuching. She came with her parents from Bintulu by bus. She's such a cute girl. Loves to do posing and modelling. Here she poses almost naturally. A potential future model in the making.

Einstein has not returned home

For five nights now Einstein has not returned home. Mama Daisy seems upset and now waits at the door for Einstein to show up. Could it be that Einstein has found a second home? For the time being, we all miss him...tremendously.

Our 9th trip back Kuching in Pictures ( 27 Sept'08)

An arch which is not an arch?!!! The sign reads " Pintu Gerbang Sibu" literally translated means " Sibu Entrance Arch", but you cannot drive your car underneath it! Our car sort of swerve around it.

A short walk from the the Sibu Arch is this small park with the stone sculptures of the Chinese Zodiac animals.

After Sibu town, we did not stop or take a rest at any of the smaller towns along the way. At Betong junction, nevertheless we stopped at the Petronas petrol kiosk to refuel and were offered free coffee.

Einstein's climbing prowress

Einstein tries to reach the very end of the slender branch to show his climbing prowress. When I screamed from below, he answered back " If I don't blow my horn, who will?"

Unfortunately for Einstein, he got stuck on the tree. " Sis, please bring over the ladder. I don't know how to get out of this tangle. It's real jungle up here." I dashed into the house to inform our foster parents. Within minutes a ladder was brought over and our foster parents brought Einstein safely down the tree. When I quizzed him later, he admitted " It's not easy to be a hero, Macy. But I'll try again". Then I reminded Einstein, " That's a trumpet tree*. You're not to blow your horn up there. Remember that! Try another tree." Einstein looked at me adoringly and with a flash of his handsome moustache said " OK, sis, I adore you. Thanks for being my mentor".

The sign says it all. Mama Daisy finds a nice spot on top of the speakers as her favorite joint. Called " Daisy Palace" it is out of bounds for the rest of us. Here she daydreams, cat nap and sleep the night long. "OK, guys put on your ear plugs,we gonna surprise her with some techno vibes !" says Einstein.

"It's about midight now and big sister Macy Grey has not returned home" says Inul. " I am worried. Very worried indeed. Didn't you hear the stray cat Mama had to fight off this evening. Since then Macy has not been back" cried Inul. " Could she be frightened and ran away somewhere?",asks Inul.

" Don't worry little sister" confided Einstein. " She's different from us. She likes to wander around the farm at night. She'd be OK."

"Meantime put you head on my shoulders. Let's sleep it off,OK".( Minutes later they were seen having more than a cat's nap. They slept ....waiting for Macy to come home)

Einstein tackles his price catch of the day - the common cheshnut munia bird. Munias are abundant at our farm because they feed on grass seeds that grow wild by the small stream that transverses our farm.

He's totally engrossed. With his mouth full he growls and snarls when approached, very possessive of his catch. He lkes to play ' throw and catch' game on the poor munia.

How We Travell

Mama Daisy is grooming me. Inul hardly sleeps during this 9th trip to Btu. Einstein ( not seen in the picture) has no problem sleeping throughout the long journey . We left Kuching at 10 am on 27 August and arrived Bintulu at 7.00 pm. Throughout the journey the weather was cloudy and we experienced rain only along the Sibu to Bintulu stretch. The wet roads slightly slowed down our journey.

As we came down the mountain to enter the plains towards Sri Aman town, we saw this marvellous stretch of hills and mountains at the distance.

I am very happy to see that both Inul and Einstein have recovered from their operation. Inul is exceptionally gifted in bringing back this pet toy once thrown at a distance, she would hold it in between her teeth and passed it back asking for another throw.

Words of Comfort

INUL - my little sister is a SURVIVOR. In less than twenty four hours after the sterilisation operation, she is now her super active self. Just now ( 20 hours after operation) she has done a good licking job of her incision wounds and looks on the way to an excellent recovery. While on bed I gave her words of comfort. "Dear Sis, your belly will gonna be fine. Soon this episode will be behind us. Be patient and Stay Cool ", that's what I told her in plain English.

Inul and Einstein Sterilised

At about 5.30 pm yesterday(4/8) Inul and Einstein were taken out from the veterinarian clinic at Mile 7 after they had the sterilisation operation done. The cost for female spaying was RM 60 and gelding for Einstein cost RM 40 . When leaving the clinic they were totally unconscious , placed in a large box and when arriving home were still unconscious. The first to recover from their unconscious state was Inul at around 7.30 pm and about half an hour later, Einstein.

Morning run encounter

In Bintulu, we were trained to do the morning run. It was a routine we always looked forward to. Here's Einstein encountering a giant millipede while on the run. He stopped for a while to play with it and then left it alone to move on with its millions of legs!!!!!

Today I am Ten Months Old

Today's special coz I am ten months old. This is my special birthday pix taken at the front porch of our house in Kuching. There are a few pixes that were taken in Bintulu just before our departure to Kuching. These are shown below to compare my size with Einstein ( who is the biggest now) and Inul who has catched up with me size wise.

The age difference between me and the two buddies is four ( 4) months.

We left Bintulu at about 9.40 am yesterday (Thursday,31st July). The car airconditioning was perfect. It was so cold that at times we cuddled against each other to get more warmth ( Einstein has found his favourite sleeping haven on the passenger seat and is not seen in the pix) We are happy to be at the jump seat .

From here I get to see a frontal view of Sibu town. Well, that's Eden Inn on the left.

We had a pit stop at Sibu town for lunch. On the menu was Tuna and Salmon. Hmmm...tastes excellent.

The above is a picture to show the extent of Sibu Central Market. I think it is the biggest market in Sarawak. Even Kuching, the capital city doesn't have one so huge like this.
On this return trip back to Kuching, we did not encounter any single drop of rain. Totally dry and sunny throughout the length of the journey.

Early Morning Run

For the last two weeks in Bintulu, we were taught to do early morning run. The guidelines are simple. At about 6.30 am everyone of us will be waiting at the back door for our foster parent to open it. Wait outside by the garden steps. Get ready to run when our foster parent shout " OK Let's go , Geng!". Then run and try to outpace the leader of the pack. Finish the run . Back to the house. When served food, eat as much as you can. Sometimes, though Inul may get a little bit exhausted and needed to rest as in the above picutre.

Einstein Having a Bowl of Time!

While my I was kept busy being photographed on one end of the table, Einstein chose a comfortable spot in a bowl to gain attention at the opposite end. Einstein has by now out grown me in size. He's a ferocious eater. Keeps his sleeping schedule seriously. Whilst Inul ( back towards the picture) is now the fastest runner in the family, the bravest climber but lacking much sleep.
